Marina Tamayo Freelance artist, Granada.
Marina is a multi award nominated choreographer and practitioner. Her training includes Ballet, Jazz, Spanish, Flamenco, Contemporary, Folk dance styles.
Marina studied classical ballet and Flamenco. At fourteen years of age Marina’s mother returned to Spain to study Flamenco in Granada with local gypsy artist Paco Torres of Sacromonte, Granada.
Marina studied for four years full-time at the Institute of Flamenco in Madrid, ‘El Amor de Dios’ alongside some of the world’s most recognized gypsy Flamenco artists including Luis de Luis, Manolete, El Guito, Belen Maya. In addition, Marina trained intensively with Graciela Rios Saiz in classical Spanish Danza Espanola in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Merche Esmerald, Maria Magdelena, La Tati in Madrid.
As a solo artist, Marina performs in theatre, TV, film, and music videos. Marina contributes to the Australian Flamenco arts community, by developing new markets, local and abroad (regional) through increased audience participation in public and community workshops and performances, curating festivals, and organizing professional performances and events.
Tamayo’s commitment to teaching spans over twenty five years and her dedication to the dance sector has recently been recognised by the Australian Dance Council by receiving an Australian Dance award nomination for her ”Service to Dance”, 2018.
Marina has produced multiple theatre shows. The shows have been presented at local, state and national events, fringe and contemporary dance festivals. Tamayo shows has received five star reviews, and honored with festival awards. These shows include the Las Alpújarras Granadinas, Colores de la Vida, Flamenco del Mar at The Basement, The Sounds of Spain, Flamenco Tablao.
Tamayos most recent works have been in collaboration with Aitor Hernandez former dancer from the Ballet Nacional of Spain producing Folkmenco, and Inertia; and the multiple award winning, EMERALD. This production was nominated for “Outstanding Achievement in Choreography” by the Australian Dance Awards and won “Best Costume” at the Auckland Festival, 2020.
