What is Flamenco?

Flamenco is a musical phenomenon that survived different
periods and trends, and transcends borders and nationalities. It
is a living art which has drawn on all kinds of different musical
trends without losing its own personality. However, its main
characteristic is its relationship with the audience, which
participates in an emotional and heartfelt manner. Even when it
is the first time that someone approaches this discipline, their
feelings are stirred, and it reaches their heart. The distinctive,
mysterious quality that makes this happen is known as duende.
This is why flamenco is also known as arte jondo (deep art),
because it goes deep into one's feelings. There are also
persons who call it arte gitano (gypsy art) due to the influence
that this ethnic group had on its birth and development.

Many artists, from the most classical of musicians to the great
figures of jazz, have been captivated by flamenco. These are
some comments that they have made about it:

“There is no music that is richer or more alive in all of Europe”
Manuel de Falla

“Flamenco is like our blues”
Miles Davis

Flamenco art results from a combination of the
different musical cultures that developed in
Andalucía, and which were passed on from
generation to generation. Its history does not go
back very far, as it has only existed for a little over
two hundred years. Nonetheless, in this music it
is possible to find the ancestral footprints of
Jewish, Arabic, Castillian, ancient Andalusian
and gypsy music, that is, of all the peoples who
passed through Andalucía.

Those who had the greatest influence on the
exisiting foundation of Andalusian folk tradition in
order for flamenco to arise were the gypsies.
They arrived in Spain in the first quarter of the
fifteenth century, but the word “flamenco” does
not appear in reference to the songs and dances
of the region of Andalucía in Spain until the
middle of the nineteenth century.

What to wear

Clothes tips for the beginner in a Flamenco
Dance class.

Try to wear a top that gives your arms plenty of
unrestricted movement.  Don't wear trousers
that are very long in the leg as a tap or stamp
on the floor needs to sound ‘clean’ and you
can’t achieve this if you are treading on your
hem. Long full skirts also  for women.

Wear a solid-soled shoe (not rubber). One
that produces some sound when you walk on
it. It doesn’t have to be deafening, just enough
for you to hear it clearly. And smooth soles
with enable you to turn easily too. You’ll really
only ever enjoy this class with the right shoes
on. New and second hand flamenco shoes
may be  available from your Instructor. Just
ask them.!  **Tip ...You dont arrive to football
with ballet shoes so dont come to Flamenco
with sandshoes!..Flamenco shoes should be
sought after initial few classes.
